FAQS

Do I need CE hours for my next renewal?

FYI - Attendance at SYTAR and SYR count up to 22 and 15 CE hours respectively each time you attend.

How do I know what competency areas to assign to my continuing education?
It is left to your discretion to determine what the appropriate competency areas are for the training you are submitting. You will need to review the IAYT Educational Standards
to see what is most aligned to your training. The title and description of the training that you enter on the form should support your choices.

I have more than 24 CE hours. Can I carry over the extras to next cycle?
No – CE credits reset at the beginning of each renewal cycle.

Is there a grace period if I don’t get enough by the due date?
Your certification renewal date is three years after initial approval. After that date your certification will lapse. If you renew after your due date you may be able to re-instate your certification but allowable CE hours must have been completed by the original recertification date.

What about courses that are In-progress at my due date?
You may only submit completed CE hours.

Do courses have to be pre-approved by IAYT?
No. Under the current renewal policy, courses may be submitted for CE hours if they are aligned with one or more of the IAYT Educational Standards
competency areas. Courses that are not related to yoga therapy cannot be submitted for CE credit with the exception of CPR training which can be submitted for a maximum of 1 credit. This policy applies to anyone approved under Grandparenting and is still in effect until new requirements are announced. Requirements will change for future renewal cycles.

Can CE hours obtained for another professional certification (e.g. licensed mental health counselor) or for registration with the Yoga Alliance be used to fulfill the IAYT CE requirement?
Yes, as long as the courses submitted for CE hours can be aligned with one or more of the IAYT Educational Standards
competency areas. Courses that do not relate directly to yoga therapy do not qualify for CE credit. An exception is CPR training which can be submitted for a maximum of 1 CE credit.

What is “the pilot program”?
In the Summer of 2018, IAYT will launch a pilot program to approve professional development (APD) courses for continuing education (CE) hours. Completion of one of these APD courses will allow easy submission of credits and ensure competency area alignment. Future CE requirements may require a percentage of hours from IAYT approved courses and/or completion of CE hours in a specified content area (eg professional ethics). Non-APD course may be reviewed to verify that the course satisfies the continuing education requirement for re-certification. FOR NOW, the initially lenient CE requirements of 24 yoga therapy-related study apply to all C-IAYTs.

How do I know how many CE hours my training will count?
For this first cycle of certification renewal, 1 hour of training equals 1 hour of CE. It can be contact or non-contact hours. If your training issues something that designates the number of CE hours submit the number reflected on the program evidence. Requirements are subject to change for future renewal cycles and will be announced to IAYT certified therapists with sufficient time to complete requirements.

Do I have to complete an Approved Professional Development (APD) course?

Not at this time, although the APD designation will identify high quality courses that clearly qualify for continuing education. The CE requirements for the first renewal of C-IAYT are broad and do not require that you attend specific courses. Requirements will change for future renewal cycles.

Requirements are subject to change for future renewal cycles and will be announced to IAYT certified therapists with sufficient time to complete requirements.
